Dom Phillips: Officials link disappearance of British journalist in Brazil to ‘fish mafia

Dom Phillips went missing with indigenous official Bruno Pereira on 5 June in western Brazil. Police have since found blood on a suspect’s boat and “apparently human” material in the Amazonian rainforest.

The disappearance of a British journalist in Brazil has been linked to an international network that pays poor fishermen to illegally fish in the country’s second-largest indigenous territory, authorities said.

Journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous official Bruno Pereira were last seen on 5 June near the Javari Valley Indigenous Territory, which sits near the borders of Peru and Colombia in western Brazil.

The two men were in the Sao Rafael community and were returning by boat to the nearby city of Atalaia do Norte but never arrived.

Local volunteers, the army, civil defence officials and state police have been searching for the pair since they went missing and police have launched a criminal investigation.

Inside the battle to keep Mafia wiseguys off the NY-NJ waterfront

The “ultra violent” enforcer, nightclub owner and loan shark at the New Jersey ports ordered a pal to hold the arms of gym owner Gilberto Rubio. Then Rodriguez ripped a gold chain from the man’s neck and stabbed him once in the chest, according to police sources and investigative records.

“It was a ‘don’t f–k with me’ injury,” a law enforcement source familiar with the incident told The Post.

The source said that Rubio, who survived the bloody attack, had fallen behind on loan payments and gambling debts to Rodriguez, an associate of the Genovese crime family. Rodriguez — who’d just gotten out of jail for shooting another man while trying to collect unpaid sports bets in 1991 — was never prosecuted in the alleged stabbing.

22-year-old homicide remains unsolved as Michiana Crime Stoppers pleads for tip

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Your case has not been forgotten. That’s the message Michiana Crime Stoppers is sending as detectives continue looking into who killed 24-year-old Leah Bailey.

Sunday marks 22 years.

On May 29, 2000, shots rang out around 10:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Queen Street in South Bend. It all started with a fight. Bailey was caught in the crossfire.

“It does not appear that she has anything to do with the fight itself. She wasn’t part of the gun battle, but an innocent life taken in the midst of that,” explains Lt. Kayla Miller with Michiana Crime Stoppers.

This young mom of two was killed at the age of 24.

“What we know is there was multiple people outside, not just those involved in the gun battle. So, we have witnesses in that area. It has been 22 years; it is time for you to come forward. It is time for you to share the piece of the puzzle that you have so we can bring some closure to this family,” says Lt. Miller.

As this family was trying to make sense of what happened and deal with the unimaginable amount of loss, this happened.

“15 years later, almost to the same day, this is May 17th so just a week shy of that anniversary for Leah, her brother Guiseppi was killed as well,” says Lt. Miller.
