Cyber conmen are targeting pensioners in the wake of the TalkTalk security hack and attacks on other major companies, it has been reported.

The criminals are reported to be trawling through the private details of thousands of victims , especially those aged over-65 as they believe the elderly are more vulnerable to fraudulent cold calls or emails.

It is believed that newly cash-rich pensioners are an attractive target as new legislation means they are able to withdraw all their retirement savings or pension pot in one go.

Hackers sell stolen data on the Dark Web using software that allows their identities to be hidden from the police.

Once conmen have bought these details they pretend to offer compensation for the data breach before asking for victims’ bank account details.

Some send emails with a message including a link that claims to direct victims to an official website.

But clicking on the link merely enables conmen to take over the victim’s computer and gain access to their bank account.

A cyber-crime officer said: “The fraudsters look for victims o their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

“Some of the conmen have call centre training which means they sound genuine when they call up pretending to be from a telecoms company.”

A Met Police spokesman said: “We are aware data stolen from TalkTalk had surfaced on the internet or criminal forums and have already taken proactive steps to remove any data where possible.”

Italian wiretaps suggest that Toronto is on the verge of a mafia war

The long tentacles of the infamous Calabrian mafia are causing trouble in Canada. According to Italian prosecutors, the Toronto outposts of the ‘Ndrangheta crime syndicate may be preparing for armed confrontation.

Wiretaps recorded by Italian investigators show that following a high-profile mob killing in a Toronto suburb in 2014, tensions between mafia families from Italy’s Calabria region are brewing, Canada’s National Post reports.

The conversations of an accused mob member who returned to Italy from Toronto “seriously highlight the danger of an escalation of an armed conflict within the coterie of ’Ndrangheta clans,” Italian prosecutors concluded, “particularly among the Coluccio and the Figliomeni (clans).”

The Italian prosecutors, who prepared a series of documents as part of a sweeping anti-mafia case, said the escalation follows the murder of Carmine Verduci, a big mafioso in the Toronto area. The prosecutors are cooperating with Canadian police.

The National Post spoke to Toronto law enforcement, who haven’t noticed any increased activity among Italian organized crime figures.

Earlier this year, Canadian police broke up a ‘Ndrangheta drug ring, arresting 19 alleged high-level members of the criminal network. According to The National Post, there are at least seven primary ‘Ndrangheta clans in Toronto, supplying a “continuous flow of cocaine.” The Calabrian mafia is among the most powerful criminal organizations in the world. According to one estimate, in 2013 the clans made more than McDonald’s and Deutsche Bank put together.

Satanist Awaiting Murder Trial Found Dead of Apparent Suicide in North Carolina Jail

Pazuzu Algarad, a self-proclaimed and not-at-all-subtly-named Satanist awaiting trial on charges of killing one man and helping bury another, has died by apparent suicide in his North Carolina jail cell, reports the Associated Press.

Pazuzu Algarad, 36, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Central Prison in Raleigh before dawn, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety said in a statement. Prison officials were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at 4:20 a.m.

The statement did not say how Algarad died. The News & Record of Greensboro reported that he had an arm wound, but did not elaborate.

Algarad was arrested last October and charged with the murder of Joshua Frederick Wetzler in 2009. After the alleged murder, Algarad and his girlfriend allegedly buried Wetzler’s body in their backyard. Algarad’s girlfriend, Amber Burch, has also reportedly been charged with the murder of Tommy Dean Welch later in 2009, and Algarad allegedly helped her bury his body, also in their backyard. This sounds like a real you-scratch-my-back-I’ll-scratch-yours type of arrangement. The homicidal Satanist version, if the allegations are true.

That home has since been demolished.

Algarad’s mother reportedly warned police that her son might attempt suicide if he couldn’t perform his monthly “dark moon” animal sacrifice, apparently part of his “Sumerian” religion.

Inmate facing charges for alleged assault of Aurora theater shooter James Holmes

(CNN)James Holmes, condemned to spend the rest of his life in a Colorado prison, was allegedly assaulted there by a fellow inmate, a state corrections spokeswoman said Saturday.

The incident occurred earlier this month at the Colorado State Penitentiary, which Holmes’ calls home given his multiple life terms for carrying out the Aurora movie theater massacre that killed 12 and wounded 70.

“It was not an attack, it was a very minor incident in passing in a hallway,” Adrienne Jacobson, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections, told CNN.

While the 27-year-old Holmes wasn’t injured, the incident was serious enough to warrant charges against the other inmate.

Jacobson told the Denver Post that inmate, 27-year-old Mark Daniels, will be charged with assault on Holmes and assault on a correctional officer.

The Colorado newspaper said that it first learned of the encounter in a letter received Friday, purportedly from Daniels, saying the incident occurred October 8. But corrections officials hadn’t seen the letter and couldn’t confirm that Daniels wrote it.

Who were the victims?

Prior to this, Daniels had been eligible for parole on February 25, 2017, according to a Department of Corrections online database. He stands 6 feet, 4 inches and weighs 195 pounds.

The Post reports that Daniels, who has gone by many aliases, is serving time on menacing, auto theft, assault and smuggling contraband into prison charges out of Jefferson and Adams counties.

Holmes, wearing a helmet, gas mask and ballistic gear, tossed tear gas into Theater 9 of the Century 16 megaplex in Aurora during the first minutes of a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” in July 2012. Armed with a shotgun, a rifle and a pistol, he opened fire; he had more than 700 rounds of ammunition with him. After his gun jammed, Holmes walked out of the theater and surrendered.

Psychiatrist: Holmes thought 3-4 times a day about killing

This month’s alleged assault on him comes less than two months after he was sentenced to one life term for each of the 12 people he killed, plus 3,318 years for the attempted murders of those he wounded and for rigging his apartment with explosives. Prosecutor George Brauchler said he believed the sentence was the fourth-longest in U.S. history.

Gunman shot shopper for looking at his girlfriend, charges state

WEST VALLEY CITY — A fight that led to a shooting in a West Valley City Wal-Mart parking lot started when the shooter confronted another man inside the store about looking at his girlfriend, according to charging documents.

Cole Ronald Shields, 31, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with two counts of illegal discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, one a first-degree felony and the other a second-degree felony. He was also charged with obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony, and three counts of felony discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony.

Shields, of Cottonwood Heights, allegedly confronted the man while leaving his checkout lane at the Wal-Mart, 3180 W. 5600 South, on Oct. 14 and asked him why the man was looking at his girlfriend.

“(The victim) told the defendant he wasn’t, and began walking to his car. The defendant followed (him) and continued to verbally harass him,” the charges state.

Shields then allegedly pulled out a gun and kicked the man in the leg. The man responded by punching Shields in the face and hitting him again after Shields fell to the ground, according to the charges. The man made his way toward his car again, this time walking backwards, when police say Shields opened fire, shooting at the man either five or six times and striking him once each in both feet.

“(The victim) required emergency medical treatment for his injuries and will be unable to walk for approximately six weeks,” the charges state. “(He) will require a bone graft to repair the damage to one of his feet.”

Shields admitted to opening fire in the parking lot, but claimed he did so in self-defense, according to the charging documents.

Utah court records show Shields entered a plea in abeyance to misdemeanor assault in June. He is currently in the Salt Lake County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
