FBI Issues Cyber Alert As Organized Criminals Drive Dating Site Fraud Up 70%

The FBI has issued a warning for Americans to be wary of “confidence/romance scams,” after the Bureau saw a 70% annual rise in reported fraud, where dating sites were used to trick victims into sending money, purchasing items or even laundering or muling money for people met online. The shift from basic fraud to money laundering is a significant worry for U.S. law enforcement and represents a nasty twist in the age-old problem of romance scams.

In 2018, more than 18,000 complaints were received with losses totalling more than $362 million. And, to state the obvious, this is likely the tip of the iceberg. For every reported incident there will be others where victims don’t come forward.

In particular the FBI warns, threat actors “often use online dating sites to pose as U.S. citizens located in a foreign country, U.S. military members deployed overseas, or U.S. business owners seeking assistance with lucrative investments.”

The Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna Feud Isn’t Just About ‘Revenge’

by Tasbeeh Herwees

Whether or not you’re attuned to the ongoing dramas of the Kardashian krew, you’ve likely heard by now that Rob Kardashian (brother to Kim; sock entrepreneur) spent much of his Wednesday posting a series of nude photos, presumably sent to him privately, by his ex-fiancée and mother of his child, Blac Chyna (formerly Angela Renee White; model; makeup entrepreneur). Because the social media spree took place after he’d discovered that Chyna had apparently cheated on him, Kardashian’s act has been roundly deemed by celebrity gossip mongers like TMZ as “revenge.”

Indeed, celebrity attorney Lisa Bloom (daughter of famed civil rights lawyer Gloria Allred) confirmed this reading of the events when she announced Friday morning that she’d be representing Chyna in court as she pursues a restraining order against her raging ex. Bloom — who helped actress Mischa Barton get a restraining order against an ex-boyfriend who was threatening to sell her sex tape — told The New York Daily News that what Kardashian did constituted “revenge porn,” stating: “Revenge porn is illegal in CA and it certainly appears to me that Rob has violated this criminal law.”

California passed its revenge porn law in 2013. Today, more than half of U.S. states have similar laws. The very language with which we use to talk about “revenge porn” reveals a lot about how we approach the issue, casting it in terms of personal drama rather than as a violation of personhood. Iowa-based Drake University law professor Shontavia Johnson says the popular phrase is misleading. “Revenge porn is really about privacy, about protecting our personal information and having a right to do that,” she says. “We use the term ‘revenge porn,’ which makes it sound like it’s about the perpetrator, but it’s really about the privacy of the individual victim, and whether or not an unsuspecting victim can in some way stop this picture or video from being placed online.”

Brad Pitt Steps Out Looking Thinner Amid Angelina Jolie Divorce

|

Brad Pitt, is that you?

The 53-year-old actor, who has always appeared fit, looked almost unrecognizable as he stepped out in Los Angeles Thursday, looking thinner than usual. He wore loose blue skinny jeans, a white t-shirt and a black zip-up jacket.

His appearance comes more than six months after Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from him after two years of marriage and a 12-year relationship. A source close to the actor told E! News last week that “things have calmed settled between Brad and Angelina” adding, “They both have agreed to put the kids first.”

Both actors have since resumed their individual work and passions, while Pitt has reportedly been also focusing on his fitness.

A source told People Pitt has been working out “almost daily” and had “lost a few pounds, he’s in very good shape.” Us Weekly reported in January Pitt had “lost a bunch of weight” and is “focusing on himself again, watching what he eats and has a chef making him healthy meals.”
