New York judge delays ‘El Chapo’ hearing

A New York judge has delayed for almost a month the hearing of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, one of the world’s most notorious criminals.

Guzman’s attorney Eduardo Balarezo had wanted Judge Brian Cogan to push back the hearing to April. But Cogan of his own accord already delayed it from January 19 to February 15.

Balarezo said he needs more time to address the 290,000 pages of documents and thousands of other documents in the case.

The 60-year-old kingpin, accused of running one of the world’s biggest drug empires, has been held in solitary confinement since being extradited on in January 2017.

Guzman — who twice escaped from prison in Mexico — is accused of running the Sinaloa cartel, one of the world’s biggest drug empires.

Rumored Harvey Weinstein Hollywood Sighting Freaks out Celebrities

Pulp Fiction actress and Weinstein accuser Rosanna Arquette shared a tweet calling it “very strange” that Weinstein was staying in the same Beverly Hills hotel as the one being used for Golden Globe Awards press. (Arquette’s Twitter account is unverified, but the tweet linked up to a Facebook account in her name as well.)

“It is Very strange ,that Harvey Weinstein is at the very same hotel in Beverly Hills that the golden globe press is being done at. I smell a Rat,” she wrote.

Actress Ellen Barkin later tweeted from her verified account wondering if Weinstein was in the area.

 

“Is serial rapist harvey weinstein in los angeles? on the wknd of the Golden Globes. Why? WHy? WHY?” she wrote, adding in a subsequent tweet that “I forgot to say ‘alleged’…because i know better.”

The rumors that Weinstein was in Los Angeles the very same weekend women planned on wearing all black to the Golden Globes in protest of sexual harassment enraged many, but Weinstein’s rep argued that he was nowhere near L.A.

Adidas executive James Gatto indicted in NCAA fraud case

Gatto was indicted for attempt and conspiracy to commit wire fraud

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Adidas executive James Gatto was indicted by a U.S. District Court on Tuesday for attempt and conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a NCAA basketball bribing scheme, according to court documents obtained by KOIN 6 News.

Gatto, a Wilsonville resident, is expected to be in court on Thursday morning. Fellow Adidas executive Merl Code and sports agent Christian Hawkins were also named as defendants in this specific indictment.

The NCAA bribe scheme came to light in September, rocking the college basketball world. Gatto, according to the indictment, conspired with college coaches sponsored by Adidas to make payments to high school players and their families in exchange for commitments to those schools.

Gatto was one of 10 people arrested and charged in September. Gatto also had complaints filed for wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, but he’s only been indicted on attempt and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Arab ‘mafia’ infiltrates German police, state services – German police union official

Powerful Arab criminal clans are actively trying to plant their members into Berlin’s police and other state services, a local German Police Union head has claimed. He went on to say the mafia gangs are seeking to control police actions.

Large criminal networks of migrant descent are seeking to provide some of their members access to the inner workings of state services, Bodo Pfalzgraf, the head of the Berlin branch of the German Police Union, told the German broadcaster ZDF on Wednesday. “The truth should be revealed,” he said.

“There are clear indications that big Arab clans have a [infiltration] strategy and try to keep certain family members away from criminal activities so that they could later infiltrate state services,” Pfalzgraf explained as he appeared on ZDF’s ‘Morgen Magazin’ program. The migrant mafia has “a vital interest in first-hand knowledge of how the state works, how the police operate and when searches [and raids] are conducted,” he said.

Mexican organized-crime groups have branched out into octopus theft

More than a dozen trailers transporting multi-ton shipments of frozen octopus have been reported stolen in Mexico in the last month, illustrating how crime groups are constantly seeking new revenue streams, even in seemingly unlikely places.

Since a devastating earthquakerocked Mexico City on September 19, 14 trailers carrying multi-ton frozen octopus shipments have been robbed on federal highways leading from the Caribbean state of Yucatán to other parts of the country, El Diario de Yucatán reported.

According to the local publication, each trailer carried 25 tons of octopus, an amount worth some $3 million. It’s estimated that the total losses accumulated from the robberies have now totaled more than $40 million.
